Swedish women have made 100,000 calls on violence against them

Tuesday, 04 December 2012
Violence against women in Sweden has been increasing in the years. In the past 5 years, about 100,000 calls have been made to the national support line, Kvinnorfridslinjen created by the government some 5 years ago to monitor the safety of women.

As the calls are free and would not appear on the phone bills as well as that the caller remains anonymous, the aim has been to make it easy for women suffering from some form of violence to report directly via the line.

According to the summation made on Tuesday, to take stock of five years since the line was created, Kvinnorfridslinjen has recorded that about 100,000 calls have been made to the lines by women fearing for or are being abused.

Kvinnorfridslinjen define what the are combating as Men's violence against women  and that it includes physical, psychological and sexual violence. It occurs in all social classes and in all age groups. The violence can be practiced by someone close to the woman, but also by familiar or unfamiliar men.

On average, nurses, midwives, and social workers have been the biggest participants, making 60 -70 calls per day. This year, approximately 21,700 calls were answered according to a press release.
