Friday, 12 October 2012
The European Union has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize, reports the Norwegian broadcaster, NRK which claims to have been informed from a credible source. The prise for the crisis hit Europe is for its intense desire to promot peace despite difference among them
The EU has been one of the favourites this year after being nominated and discussed several times before, writes the Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
This year, according to NRK, the Committee has considered that the time is right, a severe crisis hit Europe which need leadership and encouragement to keep itself together to take home the converted prize.
NRK says that the Nobel Committee said one of the reason for the award was the cohesion which lead to a more European integration, namely the spread of peace and prosperity in Europe.
The EU has created an establishment, often portrayed as a "peace project" which created a unique cohesion between former enemy countries like Germany, France and Britain.
Supporters for the enlargement of the Union have repeatedly pointed to the right peace building as an opportunity to bring in more members.
Meanwhile, the EU has also been criticized for being toothless in serious situations, such as during the 1990's bloody wars in the former Yugoslavia, which lasted for several years in the Union's direct vicinity.
The EU project has "contributed to peace and reconciliation in Europe ", says Nobel Committee Chairman, Thorbjorn Jagland at the press conference. As examples, he illuminates the long history of wars in Europe.
"Today a war between Germany and France is unthinkable, "he says.
"Europe is struggling today with severe economic problems," says Jagland, adding that "but that's not what the Committee sees as most important."
"The Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important results: its work for peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights, "he says.
