Denmark threatens to Veto EU budget
proposal if the EU fails to grant it demanded rebate
Thursday, 25
October 2012
Danish Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt (Social Democrats. pictured below) will veto the next EU financial perspective if Denmark does not get the discount of Dkr1 billion a year which the country has demanded.
Danish media reports say that the Danish government has figured out the Dkr 1 billion annual rebate which it wants to use in the financing of its tax reform, otherwise, without the rebate, that reform will not go as required.
EU leadership hopes to reach a decision on the long-term budget for 2014-2020 at a special summit in Brussels at the end of November.
All countries must agree on the budget, and if Denmark veto, it means that the seven-year budget would not be adopted and that will affects all 27 EU countries.
This comes after the EU President, Herman Van Rompuy, is in London in an attempt to negotiate with Prime Minister David Cameron, who also has threatened to veto.
David Cameron has recently been noticed distancing himself from the EU, and his threat to veto may aspects of the EU rules which has caused great frustration among the other EU countries.
