45 000 Goteborg voters to poll on congestion charges
Sunday, 30 December 2012
Goteborg is to introduce congestion charges but this is being challenged by some sector of the Goteborg residency as such there has been a call for referendum to test the authority's right to introduce such charges according to the local government act.
Gothenburg was to introduce on January 2 a congestion charge similar to those seen in Stockholm or London. As such it will costs extra to get into the city centre on weekdays during daytime. But 45,000 residents have signed up to a petition to bring about a referendum and to test the authority's resolves to impose such charges at a time when the economy is facing intense economic hardship. This follows the local Government Act which requires the signatures of at least ten percent of the residents - a number of which now been surpassed.
Before now, the congestion charge issue has been hotly debated. "The congestion tax does not affect only typical Göteborg residence, but also all those living in surrounding municipalities, "said Theo Papaioannou, one of the leader's campaigning against the congestion charge, adding that " it is clear that it is unfair that they do not get heard. Therefore, it is important for Göteborg to vote so that we can somehow make a democratic decision. "
The design of the congestion charge zone, is claimed to be unfairly penalising people just passing through.
"When you come from the south, from Mölndal and the north and just to pass through Gothenburg, you pay." "And there's a big difference from Stockholm where there is a free pass way, "he says.
The Gothenburg residence through the tabloid paper, GT signed a petition for a referendum to be held on the issue. Now the number of names collected has reached 45,000 names, more than what the law requires for such a vote, according to the newspaper.
according to the congestion charge rules, July is supposed to be a drive free of charge month, as well as weekends, evenings and nights. The driver of a bus of 14 tonnes or more will not be taxed. However, taxi and families and business cars will pay.
GT started the campaign for a referendum on congestion charging on August 16 this year. And even now, with a month and a half left of the campaign period, GT achieved the goal of 45,000 signatures.
This will be very challenging to the congestion charge authorities.
