Sweden and France disagree on agricultural policy

Tuesday, 02 October 2012
Sweden and France have completely different views when it comes on the EU's biggest spending; agricultural policy. When the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt visited the French president, Francois Hollande on Monday their differences came out clearly.

According to radio Sweden, the two countries' leaders met for the final negotiations on the EU budget that will run until 2020 and one of the fallouts of it was that there was a complete split between Sweden and France in terms of the EU agricultural policy - something which France has been too attached to for many years.

"France is very attached to the EU's common agricultural policy," said Francois Hollande, calling it a key to the construction of Europe.

"Therefore, we will be mindful of that, within the financial framework as planned, the CAP will maintain at its budget level."

Of all EU money, roughly 40 percent goes to its agricultural policy. This year, European farmers had almost Skr350 billion in direct aid from Brussels.

Sweden has been working hard to limit that amount since joining the EU. It has called for the reform of the CAP system, and now the question is highly topical given that there is a battle raging to fix the EU's long-term budget.

However, France is famous for defending its farmer's agricultural subsidies from Brussels. Francois Hollande has already seen his popularity dived to record low, just a few months after he took office, and has hardly afforded to pass decisions that can irritate the vocal farm lobby.

Swedish Reinfeldt on his part had no sympathy for the French and has been pushing forward the Swedish line yesterday at the meeting with the French president.

The EU leaders are required to have reached agreeable negotiations for the EU - wide long-term budget at a summit on 22 - 23 November.
