Denmark brings forward the withdrawal from Afghanistan
Tuesday, 19 March 2013
From August 2013, Denmark will no longer have combat troops in Afghanistan, making the withdrawal of the country's forces there brought forward earlier than previously planned.
According to Danish media, the troops are coming back home half a year earlier than the original plan which was that combat troops should be pulled out at the beginning of 2014.
After August, Denmark will still be present there with some crew, among other things, to strengthen the humanitarian response in the country.
Danish Premier, Helle Thorning-Schmidt is likely to be asked about the plans for withdrawal from the weekly press conference at the ministry at 11.30 am. But reports hold that the country's withdrawal is by mutual agreement with the British.
The Danish premier, Helle Thorning-Schmidt said today at a press conference that "Denmark is one of the countries that have drawn the most, heaviest load in Afghanistan." She continued that "during the year we went from having 650 soldiers deployed to the 300. Of course, it is aligned with Britain and the United States and it is vital that we move in the same direction as them."
