Wednesday, 02 January 2013
Sweden is always classified as leader in competitiveness but an average person will ask - what competitive leader when there are very few big players in the country treating its customers like nothing. This is referred to largely to the telecoms companies which crowd the top position in driving their costumers mad.
In 2012 judging by the amount of complaints that were made against certain companies in Sweden, the telecoms companies came on top and that were crowded on that top were Tele2, Teliasonera and Telenor. Then the cable provider, Comhem, that provide packages of telephone, internet, and television also was competing for the top spot.
The Swedish Consumer Agency, according to the Metro newspaper, identified misleading marketing to customers as the top reason for complaints. The complaints were mostly complaints about deceptive marketing on including free surfing, misleading information about price and withdrawal of rights and terms to the disadvantaged of consumers.
Several of the reports are also about contracts concluded without the customer understanding and accepting them. The companies are also reported to have called up individuals even though they actively wished not to be contacted by the companies because they had registered their names in register that were not made public.
More than 7,000 complaints were received by the Consumer Agency in 2012. According to the Metro there were 162 against Tele2, 149 against TeliaSonera, 131 against Telenor, and 119 against Comhem. Most complaints, 175 of them, however, were also against health care company, Form Life.
Besides the health care companies and telecom companies, there was also an energy savings company and a couple of others on the list of the most reported.
Swedish Consumer Agency, Konsumentverket, reviews all reports, and contacted the reported companies in cases involving many consumers.
Besides talks and some threats, the consumer organisation has not carried out any serious capital punishment against the defaulters and customer continue to suffer from the hands of lack of competition and fewer big players in some of Swedish key sectors.
