Thursday, 11 April 2013
Four Japanese automakers - Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Honda - recall around three million cars worldwide, after the discovery of problems in passenger side airbags.
According to Sky News reports, a Japanese transport ministry official said four carmakers submitted reports about the problems and the recall would reach a combined total of 3.39 million. The four makes are Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda, the official said.
According to a spokesperson for Toyota the error has to do with that some of the cars' airbags on the passenger side in the front seat could blow up when no accident has taken place.
For Toyota, the decision means that 1.7 million vehicles recalled, including 490,000 in Europe.
The error in the airbags occurs because, according to Toyota on an improperly installed component that may cause the fan to blow up and then the pillow would not work, or cause fires in the interior. So far, there is no example of it occurring, said the spokesperson.

Its affected vehicles that are all between nine and 13 years old, sold from November 2000 until March 2004, and include Corollas, Yaris, Avensis, Avensis Verso, Picnic, Camry and Lexus SC430. Toyota's share price on the Nikkei went up 4 percent after the recall was announced.
In Sweden, some 10,000 Toyota cars of different brands of model years 2001-2004 are being recalled. The hitherto detected errors relating to the right airbag and is based on a few cases reported around the world.
"It may not be fully functional," says Bengt Dalström from Toyota Sweden. Owner of suspected cars of that period would take their cars in for reports.
792 Hondas are also recalled in Sweden. "This is a global recall and it affects all the regions that we do business with," said a spokesman for Honda,
of the total recall of 1.1 million Honda cars, only a small proportion of them are in Europe and Sweden.
