Despite economy gloom, Finns saw real growth in their earnings last year
Tuesday, 05 February 2013
Finnish workers saw their earnings rose by about 0.8 percent in real terms thus indicating that their purchasing power was boosted at the end of last year.
According to fresh data from Statistics Finland, this suggests that salaries increased faster than inflation. Nominal wages—which measure money paid, not purchasing power—rose by 3.2 percent between October and December compared to the same period 12 months earlier, according the statistics agency.
The biggest winners were employees in the public sector who saw the biggest boost in their pay checks, with a nominal wages rise of 3.4 percent.
However the Finnish Labour Institute for Economic Research warns in their forecasts of an overall freeze in real incomes rise this year.
