The popular internet explorer, IE has been found to possess vulnerabilities in its operating system that is welcoming to hackers, the Swedish authorities warned.
They are alarmed by security flaws in Internet Explorer browser, something the German Government has previously warned of in the past.
"We are sending out a warning which we have presented facts about how the vulnerability looks," says Oskar Bergquist, security specialist at the Cert-se, which is a unit under the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), tasked to manage and prevent IT incidents.
The German call came after a bug was discovered that makes computers vulnerable to hacker attacks. According to researchers, there is evidence to suggest that hackers are trying to exploit the opportunities to attack the Swedish defence industry. Microsoft, which has not yet solved the problem, said on Monday that hackers could exploit the bug to infect web pages that are visited and then take control of that computer.
"Our recommendation is to temporarily use a different browser, because unfortunately there is no security in the current situation. Then it's up to each authority to decide how to act."
Bergquist points out that all browsers have security flaws, and therefore calls for a broader discussion on how to manage risks in general.
At Microsoft in Sweden, they acknowledged that they have not heard of the German government's request. But Urban Johansson at the press office says that the number of attacks so far is very small.
"We are also working on developing a bugfix that should be download and install easily. We hope to fix the problem within the next few days," he says.
Anders Nilsson recommended the Swedish authorities can protect themselves against attacks by making sure everyone is aware of this problem, especially if they know they are vulnerable to a targeted attack.
