Tourists accused of bringing deadly bacteria back home

The proliferation and accelerates of deadly bacterial in Swedish has been blamed on tourists travelling to popular destinations outside Europe. A spite of increased resistant intestinal bacteria found in Sweden recently has been tied to such movements.

According to a new study from Lund University which the Swedish daily, Svenska Dagbladet has seen, show in a study that examined 242 travellers who become sick of stomach troubles while abroad and sought care in Sweden. The study show that they types of trains of bacteria found in the sample examined had characteristic with bacterial that mutate in warm tropical regions.

As such, of those who visited Thailand 22 percent were found to have injected resistant intestinal bacteria. The corresponding figure for Egypt was 50 percent and of those who visited India, that number increased to 79 percent of resistant intestinal bacteria.

"Unfortunately, I am pessimistic about the future. The spread is accelerating so rapidly in many countries, while travel is increasing and the pharmaceutical industry has lost its lead," says Johan Tham at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University, who carried the study, according to media reports.

Johan Tham, who normally works as an infectious diseases specialist, recently defended a thesis on the resistant bacteria, which he calls the situation in India and neighbouring countries "an ecological disaster".

In these countries, there lived bacteria that can produce ESBL, an enzyme that breaks down antibiotics, in abundance. Inadequate water and sanitation systems and poor control of antibiotics are likely causes, according to Johan Tham.

The story of anti-biotic resistance in many places in the poorer countries especially in India has been documented in many places and this study through more light on how serious and costly this phenomenon is developing.
