Persistent talking of drugs and the idea of drug awareness form the youth push them to experiment and use

Tuesday, 05 February 2013
Youths are being driven to the use of drugs such as cannabis, due to increasing so-called drug awareness activities, Finnish researchers say. According to them in a new report, anti-drug campaigns may have helped increased the interest of teenagers to want to experiment and subsequently got caught in drug use such as cannabis consumption.

Speaking on the Finnish television Yle,  lead researcher at the Finnish  National Institute for Health and Welfare
(THL,)  Elina Kotovirta said "the more talk there is of it in their environment and with friends, the more interesting it becomes."

The report hold that more and more Finnish teens are experimenting with cannabis, with around twelve percent of 15–16-year-old boys and ten percent of girls in the same age group said to have tried the drug. Overall, Finnish youths are more curious about cannabis than earlier generations, according to Kotovirta.

"Traditional drug awareness programmes may not have reached the right audience -maybe drug prevention education has even increased interest," she explained.
However, Kotovirta cautions parents from overreacting if they learn their child has experimented with drugs.

According to the report, growing cannabis at home is also becoming more common. Today officials are confiscating twice as many home plantations as five years ago. There is therefore the danger of increase sensitisation of sensitive issues such as drugs and authorities and parents are cautioned of pushing their curious youths into areas that they did not originally had any interest.
