New method could lower blood pressure - research and testing show
Tuesday, 22 January 2013A plastic tube surgically inserted a new surgical procedure at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden show that it can lower blood pressure in those who suffer from too high, a new study and research show.
By adding, a thin plastic tube into the patient's groin and supplying thermal energy it affect the nervous system and blood vessels to the kidneys, writes Swedish daily, Göteborgs-Posten.
In Sweden, some 1.8 million people suffer from high blood pressure and many do not realize it. This high blood pressure can damage organs such as heart, brain and kidneys. Moreover, the risk for example, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure is very high with people who have been identified to have high blood pressure.
It is estimated that there are between 100 000 and 200 000 people in Sweden, whose blood pressure is not affected by medications. There are between 9 and 13 percent of all Swedes with high blood pressure (hypertension).
Since April 2011, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, in Goteborg Sweden tested a new surgical method aimed at reducing the blood pressure in people who might suffer from high blood pressure. So far, nearly 50 people had undergone surgery and the results exceeded expectations.
"We have reached a breakthrough in the treatment of a common disease," says Bengt Rundqvist, associate professor and consultant cardiologist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital SU.
He describes the procedure as a safe and relatively simple operation. With the help of a thin plastic tube, which is placed in the groin, heat energy which affects the nervous system and the blood vessels of the kidneys.
Approximately 50 people have undergone such surgery, through the hospital's research component, with positive results. The method is already used in several places around Europe, according to the researchers.
Each operation takes about an hour and costs about Skr78 000. The patient will stay in the hospital overnight.
