Rapid expansion of meningococcal bacterial infection in Sweden

The number of cases were meningococcal bacteria, the bacteria that cause meningitis epidemic, has increased steadily over the past ten years in Sweden has been reported as unusual.

So far this year 70 cases were reported, according to statistics from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Diseases. That compares with 47 cases throughout 2002.

The epidemic, meningitis, was responsible for the death of a five-year old girl in Orebro on Saturday. People closest to the girl are now treated with antibiotics. There is no risk to the public of contracting so there should be no panic says medics.

On there whole the Swedish authorities are worried that there is increased expansion harmful bacteria in the country. Around ten per cent of the Swedish population carries some form of bacteria, especially the meningococcal but only a few become ill.

Each year between 80 and 100 Swedes are diagnosed of the disease. 5-10 of them die.
The symptoms are high fever, vomiting, and red skin rash that does not go away when they are pressed.
