Riyadh rejects accusation that Swedish arms factory was to be build in their country
Sunday, 15 April 2012
Saudi Arabia denied on Saturday that there is an agreement with Sweden to build a weapons factory in the country.
"The Saudi
Defense Ministry stresses that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia has signed
no agreement with the friendly kingdom of Sweden to build a weapons
factory in Saudi Arabia, and that no such project exists", state news
agency SPA, according to AFP.
The statement
was the first Saudi response to the arm deal scandal that broke out in
Sweden earlier this year that led to the resignation of Sten Tolgfors,
Swedish minister of defence.
It was the
radio Sweden that first revealed what was a secret plan designed by the
Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) to create a decoy company to help
in the design and construction of an arms factory in Saudi Arabia. It
was also said that the aim was to build a plant for refurbishment and
modification of armour missiles.
The Swedish Government has stated that the plans never resulted in any agreement.
