More skin cancer risk common in coastal areas such as Gothenburg, Sweden - new research show
Tuesday, 10 July 2012
A
new cancer risk alarm warns that there is higher possibility to be
affected by malignant melanoma in a costal region in Sweden such
as more Gothenburg as well as along the coastline than in the
municipalities interior, a new observatory study has identified.
As
there is already limited sunshine in Sweden and when the sun thus
comes, it is intense and hot, people sun bathing in holidays homes
which are more located in the cost lines tend to be more exposed to the
sun almost uninterrupted that people who stay on holidays in the
hinterland, says a study from the Sahlgrenska Academy.
By
far the biggest risk happens to those who lives in Gothenburg and then
follow by those living in other coastal municipalities. They have been
called to ensure that the use of both shade and sun cream should
increasingly be a culture, as the risks to catch melanoma is 15 percent
more likely than for residents in the hinterland.
A sun bathing
study in Sweden shows that Gothenburg residents and those living on the
coast are more exposed to more sun both at home and on vacation.
A
good observation on a sunny day such as Sunday where the sun shone over
Gothenburg intensely saw bathing areas in Hovås for example filled with
sun bathers. So are you visiting Sweden, and there is a chance that
there will be good sunshine and you are tempted to go to some of our
coastal beaches here in Gothenburg, please be careful and have the best
sun cream you can get. You can also buy great sun creams in our
wonderful shipping centres here in Gothenburg city such as in Femma
Huset or in NK just a few minuets from our beaches.
The research
Researchers
at the Sahlgrenska Academy now also investigated the differences
between Västra Götaland coastal municipalities and those located
further inland.
The results show that in Gothenburg is hit 35 percent more men and 25 percent more women with malignant melanoma than inland.
In the coastal communities slightly fewer women suffer in Gothenburg, but the risk is still 15 percent higher than inland.
"It's
really important that we understand these differences and how big they
actually are. People in accommodation in Gothenburg and along the coast
should know that they should be more cautious," says Magdalena Claeson,
who is a doctoral student at the Sahlgrenska Academy and one of those
who carried out the study to the Swedish daily Goteborg Posten.
For those living here please, take the precaution and own a sun cream before venturing into the sun bathing booth.
