Swedish gaming market begins to fall blamed on foreign competition and the black gaming market
Wednesday, 20 February 2013Blamed on foreign competition and the black gaming market, in terms of earnings by the gamming companies, turnover in the Swedish regulated gaming market fell last year.
Since the mid-1990s, it has only happened in one occasion in the past but today it is believed that foreign competition and a thriving black gaming market is the likely to be the cause.
Also the last 20 years has seen the Swedish gaming market properly regulated - this has led to gamers such as Postcode Lottery, ATG and Swedish game, have seen constantly increased in turnover, with an occasional dip in 2005, when Internet poker took off.
But now the long rising trend has slowed - and led to the regulated gaming market seeing a declines in sales. For 2012, this is a decrease of approximately Skr250 million (or 1 percent) over the previous year.
And it is said that the ATG is a major contributor to the decline - the company's sales declined by about 5 percent over the previous year.
Head of the Swedish gaming board, Håkan Hallstedt cannot predict if the 2012 dip is a temporary dip or a long-term direction. However, one way to reverse the trend, according to Hallstedt, is to look at those who have taken the shares in the Swedish gaming market - the unregulated operators. In addition, Håkan Hallstedt seek ways to respond to foreign competition.
