Sweden's biggest real estate website to start receiving payments for its services

Tuesday, 09 April 2013
Swedish biggest real estate website, Hemnet is changing its approach to its business plan and would start charging real estate dealers Skr600 for advertising their houses on the site.

It is a real estate sales database giant and it is known as Hemnet, which has in the past allowed real estate dealers to advertise their products on the site for free. That is changing now, as the site will start charging for their advertising in July. Skr600 it will cost to post an item on the page.

The reason for the change to charge for a services that was previously free is that ad revenue is believed to be decreasing, as more and more people are using mobile phones instead of large computer screen.
"It is difficult to charge for ads there. The space is small and our banner advertising, which gives us revenue through the site today will disappear in part," says Hemnets CEO, Carl-Henrik Borg.

According to him, advertisers are primarily interested in larger spaces available when visitors sit at home and are using large screens.
But he admits that they also receive more visitors through the digital methods. "We have 1.6 million unique visitors a week."

Hemnet expects some looses as some brokers and real estate dealers would look elsewhere but they believe that Skr600 is not much for a broker. Maybe it will be a little tougher for sellers in rural areas, where it does not involve so much money.
Today, more than 38,000 properties are listed on the site.
