Internet web browser and open source operations system, Firefox threatens boycott of TeliaSonera
Thursday, 18 April 2013Mozilla Firefox, the internet browsing and open source operation system is threatening Swedish / Finnish telecom operator, TeliaSonera a boycott and along withdrawing its security certificate from TeliaSonera.
It comes TeliaSonera was exposed carrying out operations in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan described as providing facilities to its subsidiary there to spy on citizens in those dictatorships.
Security certificates are used on sites with sensitive information and serves as a guarantee that the user is really on the site they think they on. The security certificate is often depicted with a small padlock in the address bar.
"When TeliaSonera applied for more of such certificates from Mozilla Firefox, they expressed their scepticism to allow it, citing revelations of TeliaSonera's alliances with dictators," says Linus Larsson, the author of the book Swedish hackers, according to radio Sweden.
In this case, the question is of moral selection from Mozilla Firefox according to Linus Larsson:
"The industry relies entirely on trust. If a key player such as Mozilla Firefox withdraws its certificate, it means that TeliaSonera is not to be trusted."
