America worried about Ericsson's business with Iran
Monday, 04 March 2013The U.S. Republican Senator, James Inhofe is concerned about Swedish telecom company, Ericsson's business in Iran.
He argues that the Swedish telecom company's technology helps the Iranian regime to commit crimes against humanity, writes the Swedish business daily, Dagens Industri quoting the Financial Times.
James Inhofe (pictured here) would like to see a "review" of Ericsson business in Iran because it potentially represents a national security risk and threaten the U.S. foreign policy.
This increases the pressure on Ericsson at a time when the current sanctions against Iran requires telecommunications companies that supply the country with the technology to "act with extreme caution "given the state's violations of human rights, writes the FT.
Ericsson is said to have told the Fianacial Times that the company has reduced its commitment in Iran since 2008 and signs no new contracts in the country. Ericsson still deliver equipment to the country though.
But the U.S. legislature has or has been given a different picture of the company, citing reports from Bloomberg and Reuters, where the Iranian police reported monitoring the country's inhabitants through their cell phone use.
