Fredrik Ljungberg hangs his football boots after a long and successful career
Friday, 24 August 2012One of the Swedish football's greatest stars, Fredrik Ljungberg, has decided to keep his football boots on the shelf as he decided to stop playing.
The 35-year-old, Ljungberg has played 75 international matches, including three European Championships and two World Cups. His last club was Japanese Shimizu S-Pulse which he left in February.
Fredrik Ljungberg began his career in Halmstad BK and became influential in the Premier League club Arsenal. Ljungberg has also represented West Ham United, Chicago Fire, Seattle Sounders and Celtic.
The decision about his retirement from football has been around over the past six months, according to Swedish television which first broke the news of his retirement.
Now several Swedish media source are reporting that Fredrik has decided to quit. "I was told on Wednesday," says Ljungberg's press contact, Lili Assefa to Swedish television sport channel.
One of the main highlight in his career was his national team performance in the 2006 World Cup against Paraguay in the Finals. Ljungberg was captain of the national team from 2006 until 2008. He won the Swedish football golden ball twice, 2002 and 2006. But he has also been part of the Arsenal invincible that kept Arsenal on top in 2003/2004, in which Arsenal went undefeated through the entire season and won the league.
One of his most important matches in Arsenal shirt was the Champions League final in 2006, when Arsenal fell against Fellow Swede Henrik Larsson's Barcelona.
