New leader new boost for the Social Democrats as the party sees real boost with the arrival of Löfven
Sunday, 19 February 2012The Swedish Social Democrats' party’s new leader, Stefan Löfven has lifted his party 4.6 percentage points in less than a month, according to new opinion polls. This show a direct contrast with this predecessor, Håkan Juholt, whose arrival at the head of the party only led to the party to keep on sliding.
The opinion polls conducted but polling organisation, Sifo for the Swedish daily, Svenska Dagbladet and which is widely published in other papers show that almost 280 000 new supporters came back to he party, writes Svenska Dagbladet.
The largest losers were fund in the Left Party and the far right party, Sweden Democrats, which dropped 2.1 and 2.2 percentage points respectively.
Among the political blocs, the difference now stands at only 1.9 percentage points between, 48.3 versus 46.4 for the Alliance for the Red-Green. The Christian Democrats are again under the four percent threshold required to be a parliamentary party.
There were also some small changes in the Alliance bloc as also within the Red-Green bloc it was only Social democrats which moved forward impressively. The party ends up with 29.2 percent of support from opinion polls, though still somewhat short of their gains in the last election results. The Greens got 10.5 percent, 1.3 points lower than in the previous poll.
Within the alliance bloc, the changes are minor. Conservative Moderates remain at the same position as in the previous survey with 32.9 percent. Centre Party shifted with 0.6 and stops at 5.1, the Liberal Party goes up by 0.9 to 6.5, and Christian Democrats lost 0.4 and landed at 3.8 percent.
