Swedish immigrants accounted as increasingly well-educated despite persistent repudiation for the job market
Wednesday, 18 April 2012
Education among people with immigrant background in Sweden continued to
increase. It applies to immigrants from all parts of the world - apart
from the EU countries, according to new data from statistic Sweden SCB.
Statistics
Sweden, SCB, has mapped the level of education among people in Sweden
and finds that almost as many foreign as those born in Sweden have
post-secondary education, 38 percent and 39 percent respectively.
The level of education among immigrants is also increasing steadily,
the later they come to Sweden. Of those who arrived after 2002, 44
percent had post-secondary education, compared with 38 percent for
those who came in during the period 2002 – 2001 and 31 percent of
those who came before 1991.
The greatest increase of education attainment are for those born in
America but also notably, those born in Africa, Asia, North America and
Oceania show increases for each of the three time periods for
immigration (before 1991, 1992-2001 and after 2002).
The proportion of highly educated immigrants decreases slightly between
the last two periods in terms of arrivals from European countries and
Scandinavia.
SCB notes that differences in educational attainment are substantial
differences between different countries, ages and reasons for
immigration.
A higher percentage of women have higher education, both among Swedish
born and foreign born persons. Foreign born women have only primary and
lower secondary education to a somewhat greater extent than foreign
born men. The opposite applies to Swedish born persons, where it is
more common that men only have primary and lower secondary education,
15 and 10 percent respectively.
The differences are considerable among the countries of origin and
immigrant groups, largely because of the age structure and grounds for
immigration.
