How foreign workers are exploited in Finland
Tuesday, 03 April 2012
In a Finnish tight job market for foreigners, if they are invited to work for very low pay or for free they are very happy
For this reason, Finland losses of €600 - €700 million annually in lost
tax revenue due to foreign workers who are deceived to work for unfair
wages according to a recent report from the Finnish Police Board.
According to media reports, an increasing number of foreigners employed
in the labour market means that most are exploited. These are mainly
people who do not have linguistic proficiency and do not know the laws
of Finland.
This takes place mostly in the construction and cleaning industries –
where the problems have been uncovered. Estonian construction workers,
for example, have no final contract payment of wages or holiday and
overtime. At worst, salaries are even fully absent. Both the Finnish
and Estonian employers have been guilty of exploiting workers.
