World Health organisation shoots Swedish truck makers in the arm - Diesel Causes Cancer

Wednesday, 13 June 2012
Swedish heavy truck and heavy duty vehicles makers such as Volvo and Scania will start having sleepless nights after World Health organisation (WHO) said that exhaust from diesel can cause cancer.

The worse of it is that it places exhaust from diesel in the same risk category as asbestos, arsenic and mustard gas, a WHO experts said on Tuesday.
Exposure can be coupled to lung and bladder cancer. The experts have reclassified diesel fumes from possibly being carcinogenic to be fully carcinogenic. They encourage people to reduce exposure to diesel exhaust as much as possible.

The statement has aroused consternation in the automotive industry. Car manufacturers in Sweden, wider Europe and India, the parts of the world where diesels are common among passenger cars, have said that the experts of the WHO-IARC body should downgrade diesel hazard.
The announcement comes after a week-long meeting of the France-based IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer).

The main argument for the line has been that the exhaust gases are now treated on a completely different way than it was several decades ago. Instead, diesel is now increased from group 2A, - probable carcinogenic to group 1 - definite cause of cancer.
