Telia will charge for the use of Skype
Friday, 20 April 2012
Telia will start charging for mobile IP telephony such as Skype, even
in Sweden. No more free calls from VoIP services such as Skype and
Viber.
The announcement attracted attention when it came during a congress in Barcelona earlier this year.
It was launched in Spain within a month and in Sweden for new
subscriptions during the summer, said TeliaSonera's CEO Lars Nyberg in
connection with the quarterly report, the newspaper, Computer Sweden
wrote.
Starting in the summer subscribers will be able to choose between
subscription which includes mobile VoIP or not, reported tabloid paper,
Aftonbladet.
Telia – Sonera reported a poor quarterly report yesterday and as
competition tightens so they start looking for ways to continue
strengthening their power.
Already, several mobile operators have wanted to block users from using
free telephony services, but yet it was all about empty words. This
makes TeliaSonera first to convert threats into reality when they’ll
introduce a fee for using a mobile voice data.
“We will start charging for mobile voice. If you want to continue using
it with mobile phone, you’ll pay for it,” said CEO Lars Nyberg to
Swedish business daily, Dagen Industri in conjunction with yesterday’s
presentation of its interim report.
The extra cost does not apply to all subscriptions. It will be included
in the high end. If you pay Skr399 a month it is included in the price,
Lars Nyberg said.
