Swedish car inspection company, Bilprovningen to be sold to international buyers
Monday, 12 March 2012
Most of the Swedes' old car inspection companies are now being sold to large international companies.
This fall,
they’ll take over more than two-thirds of Bilprovningen stations.
Several companies are interested in purchasing: German DEKRA, TÜV
German, Spanish Applus, Swiss SGS and Finnish Carspect, according to
reports from Swedish media sources.
Magnus
Ehrenstråhle, CEO of Motor Vehicle Inspection Company, which handles
sales of the unit on behalf of the government, is reported to have told
Swedish media sources but the new companies do not take responsibility
for car testing and inspection in rural areas.
The Swedish
government defends the sales that it wants to accelerate the
transformation of the Swedish car testing from monopoly to competition.
It beckons with more choice and better access for motorists.
This the
Swedish government had hopped that by the 1st of July 2010, centralised
car testing and inspection controlled by the government would have
ceased. But the process has been slow making it possible to start
completing the process of Swedish Motor Vehicle Inspection to start now.
The two-thirds
now being sold are the south-western group of stations in the Göteborg
and Malmo, and the north east with stations in the Stockholm and
Mälardalen.
One third of
the stations, the nationwide group with responsibility for serviced
rural areas, are retained for a significantly slimmed – down Swedish
Motor Vehicle Inspection.
