The Nordic countries Engineered Obama – Putin co-operation over Syria
Thursday, 12 September 2013
Nordic media sources are reporting that the Nordic idea and approach to
diplomacy led to the prising a truce out of the heated deadlock between
USA and Russia over Syria. Nordic diplomatic approach to the conflict,
which would have seen the USA bombarding Syria accused of using
Chemical weapons on its citizens, was avoided thanks to the Nordic
diplomatic thinking.
According to the Norwegian paper, VG, the forced behind the growing
co-operation between the US president Barack Obama and Russian leader
Vladimir Putin over Syria came from an idea conceived by the Swedish
foreign minister Carl Bilt and Norwegian Foreign minister Barth Eide.
Through their background coordination and the visit of Barack Obama to
Sweden lasts week as well as the meeting with Nordic and Balkan
leaders, the idea was circulated and push forward to the US president
and the Russians.
Using their experience in the role the Nordics played during the cold
war, where they played the balancing force between two blocs during the
Cold War and their geographical location of the Nordic region, they
revived that position where they acted as a buffer zone of tension
between Russia and the United States.
The paper writes that over the dinner table in Stockholm the U.S.
President Barack Obama was served with the idea, which now might bring
the superpower out of open conflict over Syria and a third world war.
VG said it could now reveal that the possible solution was put together
13 days ago on a video meeting between the Nordic and Baltic foreign
ministers.
During the dinner with Jens Stoltenberg and other government ministers,
the Nordic governments had the unique opportunity to talk directly with
whom they described as the most aggressive party, U.S. President,
writes VG.
Obama stated that he was pleased of the Norwegian involvement,
according to Espen Barth Eide. Whilst the world held it breath and
waited for the attack, however, support for a U.S. attack started to
crumble.
When the U.S. and Russia meet today in Geneva to resolve the
Syria-tangle, it may be the result of a Norwegian and Nordic initiative
on problems solving during turbulent times. They proposed the Chemical
Weapons Convention as a place to force Syria to sign the convention
while jointly condemning her for the use of the weapon.
According to VG, Norwegian Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide and his
Swedish colleague Carl Bildt where the ones who first developed the
idea to start looking at the Syria conflict from the idea of
condemnation of chemical weapons.
“We have impacted. The idea was to break the irreconcilable dispute
between the U.S. on one side, and Russia and China on the other, as to
who is “good” and “evil” in Syria’s deadly civil war. I cannot say that
we had the solution. But we have certainly influenced something,” says
Espen Barth Eide to VG.
When Obama landed in Stockholm Wednesday last week, he had been
informed of the Nordic idea. He had originally cancelled a meeting with
Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G20 summit in the following
days.
VG said that it needed the foreign ministers to test the idea on
Russians foreign minister Lavrov first. On the same evening, both Carl
Bildt and Espen Barth Eide tried to get Lavrov via video link to
discuss the idea with him. He had travelled to the Olympic city of
Sochi and was not available on the phone.
The following day the Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja made
contact with the Russian. Lavrov took the idea under discussion to
sleep on. However, at that time the Russians were reasonably convinced
that the United States president had his finger on the
trigger, and that the matter was out of the diplomatic track.
But as the British though their parliament withdrew and France became
lukewarm, Obama’s turning to the Congress was something unexpected. On
Monday, while Norway was concerned with the general election, then
Lavrov played out the “Nordic” card: The proposal that Syria’s arsenal
of chemical weapons should be under international control and to
hold a Chemical Weapons Convention.
We now know that the USA held back its Syrian attach proposal and want to see how far the proposal to inspect and withdraw w the weapons would go. If there is the aversion of a third world war, today, probably the Nordic played a skilful diplomatic manoeuvre, which has not yet been full realised.
According to the BBC, Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has appeared
on Russian TV to confirm that his country’s chemical weapons will be
placed under international control. The comments came as the Russian
and US foreign ministers prepared for key talks in Geneva.
