Strong reactions in Finland after Nokia affair
Wednesday, 04 September 2013
The sale of Nokia to Microsoft has aroused strong feeling in Finland.
Given how powerful the company was part of the Finnish economy, culture
and country pride, many Finns feel defeated after the sale.
The Finns reacted strongly after yesterday’s announcement that Nokia had sold its entire mobile phone
manufacturing to Microsoft.
The company is seen as an important part both for the country’s history
and economic development that the sale is being interpreted here as a
sign of failure by ordinary people.
“Sure, I was shocked by today’s ruling, “we gave up,” said a man in
Helsinki and his wife who also said that her heart skipped a beat when
she heard about yesterday’s Nokia business.
Both their hearts went out to the 4,700 Nokia employees in Finland who
they believe risk loosing their jobs in the long run – even if it is
part of the deal that Microsoft will take over all employees.
The sales evoke emotion because Nokia mobile manufacturing has long
been the pride of Finland, which in the 1990s was transformed from a
country which merely exported wood and paper into a telecoms technology
icon. This was the company that lifted the Finnish mans’ self-esteem.
