Racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Sweden seeking United Nations help

Thursday, 22 August 2013
The other day we asked the question: Is Sweden a racist state. The answer seem to have emerged today from other unlikely sources – The UN. Radio Sweden reported on this morning that Swedish society still has problems with structural racism, hate crimes, and discrimination. It has even gotten strong today than 10 tears go. So we ask again is Sweden a racist country?
Despite repeated criticism for ten years, it has not gotten better. So today the Swedish government’s department was forced to make an account to the UN Racial Discrimination Committee of these accusations placed there by Swedish UN institution that feels appalled by the rate and extent to which these vices have eaten into the Swedish society.

“Now it is time that the government takes these matters seriously,” writes Swedish United Nations Association in the report that they hand over to the committee.
The number of hate crimes in Sweden are loud, racist organizations disseminate propaganda on the internet, the unemployment rate among foreign-born (non-white) is much higher than among people born in Sweden (White people). Graduates of foreign origin stand a higher chance of not working in their fields of expertise rather one sees many of them driving taxis in the city…— these are some of the examples of racism and discrimination Swedish United Nations Association have raise.

“Sweden has signed the Racial Discrimination Convention, but we do not live up to our commitments. Now we need an independent authority for human rights for us to deal with it here in Sweden,” says Aleksander Gabelic, chairman of the Swedish United Nations Association, reports radio Sweden.

The interview with the Swedish government is being held today and tomorrow at the UN Racial Discrimination Committee in Geneva. Swedish United Nations Association will submit its report in which, and the government will present its views on the matter. The government will likely say things are getting better.

As the Swedish UN Association calls on the Swedish government to react to the accusation that Sweden is a complex and structurally racist country, those of us who feel that there would have been more integration in Sweden just wish them well. The node in the Swedish social fabric as concerns race or difference is hard to break. It looks like the government has no powers in fixing the hate situation in the country and given our experience in the Swedish social system, racism will persist and even get stronger.
