Pictures of giant wind turbine blades being transported via the Danish roads
Wednesday, 17 July 2013
As much as there is increased talks of the effects of wind power, transporting the world’s longest wind turbine blades across Funen and Jutland in Denmark has shown that there are more challenges to get the best out of wind.

The picture above from Danish television shows how tricky it has been
to transport the longest turbine blades to the island of Funen and
Jutland motorways for further shipment to Scotland. The choice to
transport it through Thursday night was to avoid unusually violent road
users, which who little interest to overtake. One have to prepare for
the probablility that it was going to take some time.
The blades will be transported on heavy load trucks from SSP
Technology’s production site in Kirkeby located in the southern part of
the island of Funen, Denmark. In the port of Esbjerg on the Danish west
coast, the blades will be loaded onto special vessels for the sea
transport to the installation site of the Scottish coast.
Yesterday evening the transportation of three wind turbine blades
from the company SSP Technology in South Funen commenced in a journey
that is quite a large project, both for the producer and for other road
users.
Each of the impressive blades weighs more than 30 tons. The root
diameter of the blade is only 4,2 meters, ideal to facilitate smooth
road transportation. The 7 MW wind turbine equipped with the 3 SSP
Technology blades can in just 30 min. produce energy equivalent to the
annual energy consumption of an average family. The turbine has a rotor
diameter of 171.2 m, wrotes SSP technology in a press release.
