Now the strong demonstration in in Stockholm for Obama
Wednesday, 04 September 2013
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm for a
rally that was expected to stretch to 18 o’clock Swedish time to
protest in various forms in front of the US president who is currently
on his visit to Sweden.
Amidst the talk of possible military strike on Syria for using weapons
of mass destruction on its people, the drone warfare and the snooping
or better know known as data interception by the USA government,
many Swedes where out in force to show their USA visitor how much they
are annoyed with the United States.
While the president went on to dinner, the demonstrations started in earnest in Stockholm.
There were also a small group that was also to support the president
calling for him to strike Syria very hard such that it knock’s
Bashar al-Assad off power. This group however, was obscured by the
large vocal ones who saw everything wrong with the USA and nothing they
could agree to associate themselves with the US president.
Music Performances succeeded by speech from the steps of the Civic Hall
or Medborgarhuset was up to provide some animation. The Left party
official Göran Greider is one of those who gathered on site to protest
against the United States’ use of drones.”Hopes for Obama are still
there, but the war on terror is uncomfortable,” he says.
At one end of the Medborgarplatsen supporter of Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad were chanting slogans. They met with opponents chanting back.
Between them are about a dozen police officers who keep the groups
apart.
Just after 18.00 hr, they began the march from Medborgarplatsen with a
view to Mynttorget at Parliament House. According to a police officers
on site, it has so far been a very quiet affair, despite tensions
between supporters and opponents of President al-Assad.
Around 30 police officers were on the Medborgarplatsen engaged in the
task, though near U.S. Embassy continued the demonstrations.
Barack Obama visited the Stockholm synagogue where relatives of Raoul
Wallenberg, the people he saved from the Holocaust, were exhibited as
well as journalists and representatives of the Jewish community were
waiting.
