More Swedish companies are protecting their brands now than before

More Swedish companies are applying for design and trademark
protection. This indicates optimism at a time when companies are
struggling to capture markets, something that has been described
as positive in times of recession.
According to the Association of Intellectual Property Law Firms in Sweden, (SEPAF), Swedish companies are
looking more and more in protecting their intellectual property now
than ever before. Design protection and trademark protection are laws
to protect new designs such as artistic works, scientific discoveries,
technological, industrial designs, and trademarks.
“We are working actively to increase their sales – it’s what we see in
terms of protecting their own designs and brands. It is more active in
the market right now and we see it as a very positive sign,” says Peter
Friedrichsen, Director of SEPAF.
In the last three months design and brand protection applications has increased 18 ad 17 percent compared with the same period last year, according to SEPAF innovation index.
The long-term index shows that design protection claims has been
increasing since early 2012, with the sharpest increase last six months.
However, fewer and fewer companies think that Sweden is a big enough
market to afford to protect their designs or brands here. Swedish
companies are thus more active than before, but to protect their goods
internationally.
Major regions of the EU, the U.S., and Asia are becoming increasingly important markets for Swedish companies.
