HM’s ad campaign for this summer’s swimwear has aroused strong reactions from the Swedish Cancer Society.

The reason is that H & M shows an extremely tanned bikini models and that reinforces a dangerous line of beauty, and contributes to more following that route that can lead to loose of lives through skin cancer.

According to an articles to the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter on Thursday, the Swedish Cancer Society writes that  this is a type of cancer that is preventable but the clothing ginat with a large follower of young people would see this type of advert and would want to immolate such direction as a beauty recommendation.

The Cancer Society’s information officer, Lena Biƶrnstad told Swedish television that sunbathe pose a great risk of getting skin cancer and that H&M should know this better and instead encourage people to use a more sensible way of getting sun bathe.

The Cancer Society believes that the advertisement reinforces the message that brown is beautiful and encouraging overexposure. In Sweden alone over 40,000 people a year suffer from skin cancer.

H&M is said to have not shown any willingness to answer questions about the ad campaign, but writes in a press release that:
“We regret if we have upset some people in our latest campaign. It is not our intention to present a specific ideal, but the purpose is to show our latest summer collection. We embrace the comments and continue to discuss this internally for future campaigns.”
