Evolving structure of Swedish municipalities: Fears that some Swedish municipalities could die in the nearest future as their population shrink

Monday, 09 September 2013
If current projections being examined stand, then nineteen Swedish municipalities, which have shrunk every year for two decades, will continues and would even disappear.

According to media reports, twelve of them would died before the turn of the century.
The Swedish population continues to be concentrated in urban areas, college towns, and enticing coastal municipalities. Small rural towns are becoming less popular and are attracting less and less youthful population and instead a more aging population.

Population curve from 1990 onwards has been looked into and conclusion being drawn is that the municipalities of Ljusnarsberg and Strömsund stands first in line on the precipice. It is projected that  by 2070, these two municipalities would be empty, if the trend continues, according to media reports.
Strömsund has certainly attracted 60 Dutch and Germans. But still, too few children are born in Jämtland Commune on the whole to be able to created any sustainable population growth.

Within 20 years Kramfors lost nearly one in four of its residents and may cease to be residential destination in 60 years. One of the outcries is that there is increasing difficulties getting Swedes to move here and to take a job.
On the flip side, population growth is driving some 54 municipalities to qualify as super municipalities. They grow in all ways a community can grow and have increased the number of residents above the national average and without interruption in the last ten years.

Super Municipalities are the Swedish municipalities which in ten years have increased their population more than the country as a whole (over 7 percent), and which also served as destination for more immigrants than emigrants, more born than died and more people moved in from other parts of Sweden than moved out.

Another 25 municipalities have grown every year over the past decade, but among them there are municipalities with negative net migration or birth deficit. Göteborg and Malmö are examples of municipalities that have grown over ten years, but where there has been more domestic relocations than immigrations.
According to EU statistics office Eurostat, Sweden is undergoing Europe’s fastest urbanization and most of the fast-growing metropolitan counties located in Stockholm lan, Skåne and Västra Götaland.
