Fake bills becoming more common in Sweden and becoming a growing problem

Monday, 20 February 2012
Among the types of crime on the increased in Sweden the most in 2011, according to statistics from the Swedish Crime Prevention Council (Brå), fraud through fake bills or invoices is on the rise.

In 2011, 3850 more fraud using fake bills were reported than the previous year, representing an increase of 29 percent.

This means that more than 17 100 fraudulent bills where issues to people and the matter reported to the police, this was some 47 items per day. Overall, around 114 000 cases were reported to the fraud authorities in 2011. Fraud crimes are thus accounted for 8 percent of the reported crimes, which was double the previous year.

Within the past 10 years there has been growth in such line of offenses that increased by 163 percent. National Council for crime prevention expects that the large increase can partly be explained by increased police efforts to combat Internet-and credit-related scams.

In 2011, however, computer fraud belonged to one of the categories of crime that had the largest decrease. The decrease in the number of reports was 5780 items, or 22 percent.

Swedish Trade Organization has a warning list that currently includes over 50 companies. The list warns not only for companies that might fall victim of these fake bill givers, but also companies with unscrupulous sales practices and misleading mailings.

The list is being updated and recently the warning list received more companies on the likes of FöretagsSök.se, RXH and Näringslivssök.

Total reported more than 1.4 million crimes in 2011 to police, customs and prosecutors. This was an increase of three percent over the previous year. All companies on the Swedish Trade Alert List is available here
