Denmark donate Dkr10 million in typhoon aid to Philippines
Tuesday, 12 November 2013
Denmark is ready to send emergency aid to the Philippines following request from the UN.
“It is a very significant natural disaster where hundreds of thousands
of people are now in sorrow and distress, and therefore we have decided
to give up to Dkr10 million in emergency aid,” says Development
Cooperation minster Christian Friis Bach to Danish television.

“The money will be available as soon as there is an appeal by the
United Nations. United Nations and the Philippine authorities are in
the process of getting an overview of the disaster and assess needs. So
when they send out an appeal, and we will immediately
react,” said the minister.
“There has already been an informal contact with the United Nations.
They have requested Denmark to help establish coordination centres to
plan and coordinate efforts,” he said.
So far, the typhoon killed up to 1,200 people, 200 in Samar Province
and 1000 in the city of Tacloban. At least 10,000 people are feared to
have been killed by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the central
Philippines on Friday.
The typhoon-ravaged island nation received winds of up to 275 km / h
or 76 meters per second and was thus designated as a Category 5, the
highest category on the scale.
According to the BBC, The UN has launched an appeal for $301million to
help relief efforts in typhoon-hit areas of the Philippines.
The UN says more than 11 million people are believed to have been affected by the storm and some 673,000 displaced.
Several countries have deployed ships to help the relief effort, but bad weather is hampering aid distribution, the BBC says.
