Bomb threat at Swedish embassy in the USA – probably linked to WikiLeaks
Friday, 20 December 2013
A bomb threat at the Swedish embassy in downtown Washington which is
also blamed for causing a major traffic mess during rush hour Thursday
could be tied to WikiLeaks.
According to reports from Swedish television, security police and dogs
were deployed to search the building that housed the Swedish embassy in
Washington after it emerged that someone called and left a bomb threat
and which resulted in the mass evacuation of people, Therese Lindé,
manager at Swedish Chamber of Commerce in the Swedish embassy in
Washington, told Swedish television.
According to Therese Lindé it triggered the fire alarm and 60 – 70
people were allowed to leave the building in a calm atmosphere.
Google
U.S. Secret Service was on site within a few minutes, and searched the
building with bomb dogs. They found nothing and at two o’clock Swedish
time the danger was blown over, confirmed Ambassador Bjorn Lyrvall
according to Swedish television.
According to reports from the USA, authorities received a call of a
threat to the Swedish Embassy in the 2900 block of K Street Northwest
around 3:30 p.m. US eastern time. Police swept the embassy for about
three hours, but the search did not yield any suspicious items or
materials.
Streets were closed for several hours in the Georgetown area, including
traffic in both directions of Rock Creek Parkway near the Kennedy
Centre, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Street closures in the area were lifted after 6:30 p.m., however traffic delays are still expected.
According to WTOP FM radio WikiLeaks tweeted that the threat was tied
to its founder Julian Assange, who is fighting extradition to Sweden.
An embassy spokeswoman said that members of the Swedish press in D.C.
had inquired about the link to Assange but she could not confirm such a
connection to WTOP.
