Microsoft, Nokia to invest millions in Aalto University

IT giant Microsoft and Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia are planning to
invest up to 18 million euros in a new mobile applications development
programme at Aalto University.
The AppCampus programme has been set up to foster the creation of
applications for Windows Phone and Nokia systems, including Symbian, as
well as to produce a new generation of mobile start-ups.
Each company will invest up to nine million euros over the next three years, starting this May.
AppCampus hopes to attract thousands of aspiring developers and entrepreneurs from across the globe.
“Finland is an early-adopter market, and the significance of national
education and technology innovation is deeply rooted in our culture. As
a result, there is a growing appetite for entrepreneurship among the
younger generation at Aalto University and beyond,” Prime Minister
Jyrki Katainen said at the programme’s launch event at Aalto Design
Factory in Espoo on Monday morning.
Nokia and Microsoft teamed up last year, with the mobile phone maker
adopting the Windows Phone system as the main platform for its
smartphones.
Aalto University, whose main campus is located near Nokia headquarters,
was established in 2010 through the merger of three other institutes of
higher learning.
