Nordea cautious and rejects Iranian students from opening bank account
Monday, 17 September 2012Nordea became defensive and rejected Iranian students' ability to open bank accounts as such constricts the ability of relatives in Iran's ability to transfer money and pay their student bills in Sweden.
After events happened in the past in which sanctions imposed on Iraq and Iran have been ignored by various companies and the way those companies have been sectioned by both the US and the Swedish authorities, Nordea has decided not to take chances.
The Bank has so far refused Iranian students to open current accounts with reference to international sanctions against certain banks and corporations in Iran.
"Our interpretation of the rules was that we were not able to do it. Now we have changed the interpretation," says Nordea's press officer Erik Durhan to Swedish television.
