Pack wolves devour a zoo keeper in Kolmarden, Sweden

Monday, 18 June 2012

A Pack wolves devour a zoo keeper in Kolmarden, Sweden in what authorities describe as unexplained death, question have emerged one more about teh relationship between man and wild animals.

Before the tragedy which took place yesterday Sunday, it is reported that no wolves had been identified as showing signs of abnormal behaviour, the zoo management claim.

“For those of us who work in the park, the incident is incomprehensible and inexplicable,” said Kolmårdens zoological director, Mats Höggren at a press conference at ten o'clock, Swedish time this morning.

There are no witnesses to the incident that took place in a secluded part of the park with has no surveillance camera. The wolves up till now, according Höggren, have not provided any reason for concern.

“There were no indications that the wolf group would have been out of balance. Past incidents have always been accounted for,” says Mats Höggren, referring to a similar incidence in particular earlier this spring when a young female visitor was bitten in the thigh during a visit to the enclosure.

Despite yesterday's tragedy the wolves' behaviour has not changed and they are said to be "as usual". Now the police will conduct a technical survey of the enclosure as the woman’s body undergo an autopsy for cause of death to be determined.

“We know really only that she died in the wolf enclosure, but we do not know what killed her. We do not know if it can be connected to any other event or disease,” says Mats Höggren.

According to Mats Höggren each animal keeper is very experienced and familiar with this group of wolves that were specially selected to participate in what the park called "Close Encounters with wolf".

Mats Höggren explained that to establish this type of animal group, the set up from the beginning the wolves are reared from a few days old and breed fed them with a bottle.

The animal keeper was inside alone with the wolves yesterday described as a normal procedure for maintaining the relationship between wolves and their carers.
Other questions being asked are whether she might have collapsed and fell on one of the animals and they rush on her to defend themselves from what they might have thought was a threat. What ever the case maybe, the mystery surrounding the death of the woman is being investigated
