Wednesday, 05 December 2012
Sweden hit since yesterday by intense snowfall that has created disruptions to public transport and has continues on Wednesday through the afternoon and evening.

Heavy snowfall and wind cause major problems for air, rail, road, and electricity in large parts of Sweden. This morning flights could not take off or land at the various airports, but then at 10 o'clock some departures could take place.

But traffic disruptions at the airport continued throughout the day and probably well into the evening, according to Swedish airports' communications autghority. Some 60,000 passengers so far were affected by the grounded flights.

Transport Administration and the police are discouraging individuals from driving unless it is necessary. Several schools were closed, and thousands have lost electricity.

Thousands of people, mainly in eastern Svealand, are currently without electricity as a results of the blizzard.
"It is very difficult for engineers to get around, both on the roads and in the woods. But we are working as fast as we can," says Victoria Raft, press secretary for energy company Vattenfall, which has 5,500 customers without power in the Stockholm area.

500 Eon customers in the Gryt archipelago of Östergötland are also without power. Eon also has a break, which affected about 1,000 people in Jämtland,  whther that is caused by the weather or not is unclear.

According to Fortum snowfall around Årjäng in Värmland jas been a problem because the wet snow that settled on the trees caused them to break damaging power lines.
A train on Lidingö outside Stockholm derailed at 13 o'clock, probably because of the  lot of snow on the track, as Arriva Sweden which manages the operation said. There were no reports of any damages or casualties. Most rail Traffic was cancelled and no replacement buses could run the distance.
