Monday, 20 May 2013
A large number of youths went on the rampage last night in Husby
outside Stockholm and started throwing stones at the police after
setting cars and building alight. A school fire ravaged and some 50
people had to be evacuated because of heavy smoke.
"There is considerable damage in Husby center. Many glasses have been
shattered," says Fredrik Andersson, county representative at the
Stockholm police to Swedish television.
About 40 police officers were involved in the operation during the
night, according to Andersson as the unrest was surging back and forth
throughout the night. The Unrest started at 22 o'clock when about 40
youths threw stones at police and set fire to cars.
A recycling centre and a garage were destroyed by fire, and some 50
tenants living next to the garage were evacuated. Later, a school in
Trondheimsgatan was torched, but the rescue personnel present soon
extinguished all fires.
The unrest also spread to the area around Husby centre, where the police claimed it was extensive with lots of broken windows.
Three policemen were injured when they were hit by stones thrown by the
young people, but the damage is reported to be considerably. At 5:30
o'clock in the morning, quietness had returned to Husby.
"Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the rioting, but
so far no one has been arrested," said county duty officer Fredrik
Andersson.
Swedish Radio has spoken with a resident of Husby, Ali Muzelef who was
on the street when the rioting occurred. According to him, it was
caused when a man was shot dead by police in Husby after threatening
people with a knife last monday.
The killing of the 69 year old is said to have led to the calls for a
whole demonstrations, using phones, and social media network sites.
