Variation of suicides rates in Sweden

Thursday, 02 August 2012
In the past years, the rate of suicide in Sweden has reduced comparatively but there is growing worrying variation around the various counties of the country.

Värmland leads the country in terms of the growth of suicides in the country and this is worrying such that serious efforts are on the way to prevent the numerous growing suicides.
On the whole the number of people who kill themselves differ in suicides per 100 000 inhabitants. The top three places in Sweden where people kill themselves more is are  Varmland,  Jämtland and Gotland.

In Värmland 16.5 people per thousand of the population committed suicides. This compares with the country as a whole where the figure is 12.8.

The county where most people choose to take their own lives have several common denominators, the researchers said.

"Suicide is very much about the feeling that goes on in a society. These are places where unemployment and emigration are high. I can imagine that there have been periods in these areas with a form of collective depression. A social climate that has partly been hard and tough," says Lars Jacobson, professor  of psychiatry at Umeå University to Swedish Television.

Västerbotten is the county in which at least suicides occur each year. There are some 9.8 per 100 000 of the population who commit suicide here. However, Västerbotten in similar periods has had problems with emigration and unemployment. Nevertheless, scientists believe that the few suicides here are because the county has a strong tradition of social work movement.
"As a result, people have had something to live for and they had a large social network which has survives to this day," said Lars Jacobsson.

Overall scientist has carved out a pattern of living in Sweden in many years in the past. The general description, which can be summarised here, is exacerbated by the very coldness of the country and period of long dark months. This has forced the Swedes to have a pattern of living, which has encouraged isolation, loneliness, boredom and psychological misery.  Those who have a job tend to focus on it and take little time for distraction, for example.

Some other left wing organisation has blamed the lack of proper integration in country in which there could be more diversification of the ways of living through integration. This means that more people tend to live within their own style and have learnt very little from other people who are not like them. Having different people with new ideas and ways of living could open up and change perceptions. For example, integrated family units of the non - white Swedes could teach the Swedes how to be more family related and closer than the current individualistic ways of living.
