Up hill task to transform some 77 000 Swedish youths feared will never be employable

Some 77 000 Swedish youths - defined as young people aged 16-29 are at risk of never getting a job. They have neither studied nor worked in the last three years, according to a report from the Swedish Employment Service.

Time is running out in trying to make them employable again. They are defined

simply as young people whom for several years in a row are not in work or studying. Some have been like that for more years and the consensus is that they might likely never be employable.

20,000 of these people have never had contact with the Swedish Employment Service, according to the report, one in ten young person is without a job or a training place in Sweden.

To fight this vice, the Swedish Employment Service began working to fish them out, as it was known that they would never come to the employment services themselves.

The report shows that many in this group never attended school or completed high school.

When the employment services presented the figures, words such as "alarming" was used to describe the feeling people and authorities had for such a situation. This is also particularly alarming in a Sweden, which has always presented as a bastion for designing the best human being on the planet. How thus could 77000 youths be missing out of the coherent welfare system as Sweden?

"There is a failure to society," said Angeles Bermudez-Svankvist, Employment Service director general. She went on to defend Sweden and her office as that: "We are well positioned compared to other countries in Europe, but that's no consolation if other European countries have the same or worse numbers."

How long will it take to solve this problem?

Angeles Bermudez-Svankvist thinks it will take time to deal with these young people and to properly prepare them for the job market: "I may have a target aim of three, five, ten or fifteen years. This situation has certainly taken 20 years to create."
