Swedish people throw away food worth billion each year

Friday, 03 August 2012
We have persistently written on this network that food is very expensive in Sweden. We are forced today to apologise  for that because most of what we have written in the past about high cost of food here does not match with the people's attitude towards it.

t would be expected that if food is expensive it will be treated with respect. It does not seem to be that way in Sweden

Therefore we have asked the question: how can food be this expensive in Sweden and then the people throw away tons of uneaten food every year?

This came in the backdrop of a survey conducted by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency which shows that the Swedes throw away a million tonnes of food a year. It is food worth in monetary terms billions of kronor, reports Swedish daily, Dagens Nyheter.

The Environmental Protection Agency's perception was that half of the losses comes from the grocery dealers, but it turns out after the survey that the vast majority come from households.

Food companies have different ways to account for food waste, but the food being discarded corresponds to around 10 percent of Food Company’s turnover, according to the paper. Grocery stores discard daily products which are fully degraded.

There could be some justification after all that food should be made more expensive in Sweden after all it is a very rich country and people will not feel it.
