Sweden's population grew to over 9.5 million

At year-end, Sweden's population stood at 9,5million people meaning that Sweden's population increased by more than 70 000 people in 2012.

According to recent statistics from Statistics Sweden, Sweden's population increased by 73 038 persons during 2012 and amounted to 9 555 893 persons at the end of the year.

After a few years of reduced immigration, figures for 2012 again show an increase; a total of 103 059 persons immigrated that year - the highest level ever. Emigration also increased somewhat during 2012 when 51 747 persons emigrated, exceeding the high figure of 2011.

The number of immigrants was at a record level when 49 673 women and 53 386 men moved to or returned to Sweden. As usual, Swedish citizens who re-immigrate comprise the largest part of the group of immigrants. They accounted for 20 percent of all immigrants.

After the Swedish citizens were Syrian citizens the largest group of immigrants. More than 4700 citizens of Syria immigrated to Sweden last year, which is three times as many as the year before.

Also emigration increased slightly last year. 51,747 people emigrated from Sweden in 2012, which exceeded the 2011 high figures by 568 people.
