Sweden warns of poisonous Czech alcohol in circulation

Dozens of people have died from poisoned liquor from the Czech Republic leading to the Czech government banning the sale of spirit with alcohol content of above 20 percent. Now the Swedish authorities warned of the poisonous liquor.

The warning comes from the NFA and the visitors to the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia as well as in Danmark.

The national alcohol monopoly, Systembolaget, has stopped the sales of two Czech spirits, Hammerhead and Becherovka.
Reports talk of alcohol mixed with methanol - wood spirit and the likes have cost lives with 22 dead and more than 30 cases of poisoning only in the Czech Republic.

Even in Poland and Slovakia, there have been both deaths and poisoning with spirits from the Czech Republic.

The Czech total ban on strong Spirits sales was introduced last Friday. Authorities have attempted to source the poisonous liquor. Methanol has been found in several products of different brands.

Czech Republic will report regularly on progress to the EU food safety authorities from where Sweden will build its own strategy from.
