Strong growth in interest in sporting activism in Sweden

Monday, 26 March 2012
Sweden used to be very good in sports - from football to individual sporting activities. Then after a while, just a few years ago, that interest slumped and audiences in sporting activities slipped.

Today things have changed and interest in Swedish sports has increased dramatically over the past year.

According to research conducted by Swedish television, attendance in most large sporting series has increased in audience since last season.

Football League is the nation's most-profile series and it increased their average attendance from 6518 persons in 2010 to 7326 person in 2011, an increase of 12.4 percent. Although Swedish football has been marred by hooliganism and violence in many cases, it is not clear if this vice would have attracted more audience.

However, clubs and unions have worked hard to recruit audiences and in some places it has even doubled audiences. The view is that the European football championship and the headlines of great stars such as the return of Brazilian star of the lady’s football league, Martha, and all the other big names that have played in the U.S. could make this year even better according to Swedish television.

The Swedish female football league, the Damallsvenskan, increased it audience by 42 percent, floorball league by 15 percent, basketball league with 14 percent. The largest percentage increase was speed way premier which closely doubled its average.

Only the Swedish football Premier League and Hand ball league did fail to impress that much last season.
