Powerful explosion in an apartment in Stockholm kills three people

A violent explosion in an apartment north of Stockholm has cost three people their lives. Two victims may be children.

Three people have been found dead after an explosion and subsequent fire in an apartment in Sundbyberg, a suburb eight kilometers northwest of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

According to the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, two of the victims were children. Police are now investigating the case as a criminal.

The fire in the apartment broke out at 4 am Swedish time on Friday. Neighbours alerted police when they heard the explosion and saw that there was heavy smoke out of the windows.

"It seems to have been a very powerful explosion," says Roger Sverndal from the Swedish Rescue.

The victims were found by firemen who came into the apartment when the fire was extinguished. According to Roger Sverndal the apartment was completely damaged.

Aftonbladet reported further that the police bomb technicians arrived at the site and are now conducting technical investigations on the cause of the explosion.
